Nainital is the jewel of Kumaon in Uttaranchal. While this State boasts of many hill resorts, Nainital is clearly the most favoured destination. About this destination, you must decide whether you like crowded places or slightly isolated locations. In the summer months thousands of tourists descend on this lake town, making it really crowded. Again there is a heavy tourist inflow in September and October which coincides with the holiday season here.

In Indian mythology, Nainital is considered one of the 64 'Shakti Peeths'. Legend has it that a grief stricken Lord Shiva was carrying Sati's decapitated body when one of her eyes fell here. The Nainital Lake is in the shape of an eye and the town derives its name from the combination of Nain (eye) and Tal (lake). The Naina Devi temple is located at one end of the lake.

Road distances to Nainital: Delhi: 322 km Bareilly: 141 km Lucknow: 401 km Almora: 66 km Ranikhet: 60 km Kausani: 120 km Corbett (Dhikala): 128 km Most buses and shared jeeps leave from the bus stand at Tallital.
	Rail: The Shatabdi Express shuttles once a week (Sundays) between Delhi and Kathgodam (35 km from the hill station), only during the summer season. The nearest railhead is Kathgodam, 35 km south of Nainital - connected with Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Agra, Bareilly and Lucknow.
