Nainital is the jewel of Kumaon in Uttaranchal. While this State boasts of many hill resorts, Nainital is clearly the most favoured destination. About this destination, you must decide whether you like crowded places or slightly isolated locations. In the summer months thousands of tourists descend on this lake town, making it really crowded. Again there is a heavy tourist inflow in September and October which coincides with the holiday season here. For a quite holiday, visit Nainital in winter when only the local population roam the streets.
In Indian mythology, Nainital is considered one of the 64 'Shakti Peeths'. Legend has it that a grief stricken Lord Shiva was carrying Sati's decapitated body when one of her eyes fell here. The Nainital Lake is in the shape of an eye and the town derives its name from the combination of Nain (eye) and Tal (lake). The Naina Devi temple is located at one end of the lake. |

- BY AIR: The nearest airport is at Pantnagar, which is 70 km away. Taxis and buses are easily available from here.
- BY ROAD: Nainital is connected to NH 87. Regular buses run from Delhi, Agra, Dehradun, Haridwar, Lucknow, Kanpur & Bareilly. Luxury coaches are available from Delhi.

- BY RAIL: The nearest railhead is at Kathgodam, which is 35 km away. Trains are also available from Haldwani which is 40 km away.
