Chamba, Himachal Pradesh [India]

The enchanting town of Chamba is situated in the western Himalayas and stands on a plateau on the right bank of the Ravi river valley between the Dhauladhar and Zanskar ranges south of the inner Himalayas. This town was founded by Raja Sahil Varman after he conquered the region from some petty chieftains in the beginning of 10th century. As inferred from genealogical rolls of the Chamba Rajas, the place was rich with the highly fragrant Champaka tree and guarded by goddess Champavati. Therefore, the name of the town.

While the town is essentially known for its ancient temples and their unique design and architecture, Chamba is also a treat for adventure tourists in winter when the higher reaches of the district are snow clad and access to most of the villages is on foot. Trekking is particularly challenge in these months.
